About Richard Elbein

Richard Elbein has been the CEO of the Houston and Southeast Texas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association since 2002.

Richard received his undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from University of Texas Austin and his Masters degree in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech.  He spent more than 20 years in health care administration prior to joining the Alzheimer’s Association.

Alzheimer’s is a particular passion for Mr. Elbein. His maternal grandfather lived with progressive dementia for five years prior to his death in 1998, and his paternal
grandmother suffered with Alzheimer’s for many years prior to her death in 2000.  He was the caregiver for his mother, who had Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, and his aunt, who had mixed dementia.

About Steven Starks

Steven Starks is a geriatric psychiatrist and medical educator at the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine.  His work in medical education aims to create a culture where mental health treatment is compassionate, accessible, equitable, and free of barriers.  Throughout his career, he has examined the cultural and social effects of mental health conditions on patients and families.

Starks has a passion for mental health advocacy and serving communities that have been marginalized and made vulnerable by systemic and structural factors. Starks was a Pozen-Commonwealth Fund in Health Equity Leadership at the Yale School of Management and a Health and Aging Policy Fellow and American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow who served in the Office of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives where he contributed to the design, drafting and roll out of the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act.
