About Dorothy

Dorothy Gibbons

Dorothy and Dr. Dixie Melillo founded The Rose in 1986 believing that no woman should die from breast cancer because she could not afford a mammogram. Since its inception, The Rose has served over nearly one million women and men and provided 1,300,000 services. With two Houston-based diagnostic centers and five mobile mammography coaches, The Rose serves over 40,000 women annually and provides services throughout 43 counties in Southeast Texas. Its Mobile Mammography Program is the largest in the State. The Rose is recognized as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and is listed as a top safety net provider for breast healthcare in Harris County. Its award-winning Patient Navigation Program secures treatment for 500 uninsured women each year who are diagnosed with breast cancer and has been replicated throughout the nation.

Dorothy introduced the concept of patient navigators in 1999, created the Breast Health Collaborative of Texas in 2007, and launched a multi-county mobile mammography program in 2010. In 2022, she initiated the Mammogram to Medical Home program to eliminate another barrier to care for those women who do not have a physician.

She was the first female to win the Community Health Leadership Award in 2008, in 2017, she was recognized nationally with Nancy Brinker as a Woman of Vision, was one of 2020’s Most Admired CEOs by Houston Business Journal and in 2022 a SurviveHER Champion.

Dorothy’s book, The Women of The Rose, published in 2015, has ranked number one in Cancer E-books. In March, 2023 Dorothy launched The Rose “Let’s Talk About Your Breasts” Podcast which ranked #8 on Apple non-profit podcasts and has now exceeded 35,000 downloads.
